Tighten up your belts: Rage is coming your way Sept. 13, 2011. For long, id has responded to questions about the release timing of its games with one simple phrase: “When it’s done.” However, at QuakeCon 2010 in Dallas, the studio’s lead designer gave the new game Rage a hard launch date of September 13, 2011, in North America. But it’s too long way to wait!

Rage is set on a post apocalyptic Earth in the centre of recuperating from an asteroid collision, where humans have emerged from underground “arks” much like the vaults in the Fallout games. Players assume the role of a survivor who has come out from an ark and has been afterwards outfitted with an range of performance-enhancing nanotechnology and some powerful ranged weaponry. It is based on the id Tech 5 engine, the latest development toolset crafted by the company’s chief technical officer John Carmack.

The postapocalyptic hybrid of first-person shooter and driving game will arrive on the PC, Mac, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 in Europe on September 15, 2011. A 60fps iPhone version was also shown off at the event. The change in id’s release-date policy comes just over 13 months after the studio was bought by ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Elder Scrolls and Fallout publisher Bethesda Softworks. Although Rage was originally going to be published by Electronic Arts, following the buyout Bethesda took over the distribution reins for the game. Rage has also recently won several Best of E3 2010 trophies at the Game Critics Awards.
