Nissan Motor’s Nissan LEAF, the world’s first affordable, zero-emission car, designed specifically for a lithium-ion battery-powered chassis, is a medium-size hatchback that comfortably seats five adults and has a range of more than 160km to satisfy real-world consumer requirements. And now we have dates for it’s official release…..so are you ready for the electric drive?

According to a latest quote by Gizmodo, “The Leaf, Nissan’s all-electric vehicle priced at $32,780, will be released in Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, and Tennessee as early as this December.” Though only initially available in five select states, the Leaf will cost $8,220 less than the Chevrolet Volt, which also debuts in December.

TechCrunch says “The Leaf will arrive in Texas and Hawaii in January of 2011, head to North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Washington DC, Virginia, Maryland, South Carolina and Alabama in April and roll into the rest of the country by year’s end.”

And let me tell you that the craze is steeping high. While speaking to a Nissan representative in recent times, a update on the ’state of the reservation’ process was given.  To date, Nissan has booked already 16,300 handraisers. And while that number has certainly slowed from the initial rush of eager future EV owners, the number has started to rise quickly again of late. Nissan said they have plans to hold open the reservation process until 25,000 people have signed up, and they asked us to “encourage folks to keep reserving their LEAF at nissanusa.com,” while stressing, “We are not sold out!”

“These states are a part of the EV Project, a partnership between the U.S. Department of Energy and private firm ECOtality to establish EV infrastructure, such as charging stations. This makes the aforementioned states the most suitable staging grounds for the Leaf’s initial offering,” explains Kicking Tires.
