Now MeeGo is reportedly making its way into cars. Yes, GM, BMW, Hyundai and Peugeot Citroen, have shown interest and have decided that soon MeeGo will be powering their cars. Earlier the MeeGo OS was already running on a variety of different devices. We have seen netbooks running MeeGo, early builds of MeeGo running on the Nokia N900, Intel confirmed it running on TVs, rumors regarding Nokia building a MeeGo tablet. Now soon we will be seeing in-car systems running the linux based MeeGo OS.
According to latest reports, Alliance GENIVI, next generation producer-car infotainment systems, have chosen operating system MeeGo for their devices. Its founders and key players are companies BMW, GM, PSA Peugeot Citroen, Intel, ARM; alliance members are also Renault, Hyundai, Nokia, Pioneer, Cisco, Samsung and other activities of the alliance allows automakers to reduce costs for the establishment and implementation of on-board information entertainment systems in their cars.
Development of the project involved MeeGo Intel and Nokia. This operating system kernel, based on Linux, can be used on different types of devices: from smartphones and netbooks to TV, providing access to Internet services. Nokia plans to use MeeGo primarily on expensive smartphones N Series.
MeeGo is said to provide the base for the upcoming GENIVI Apollo release. In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) is a rapidly growing and evolving field that encompasses all the digital applications that can be used by all travellers in a car. Navigation, entertainment, location-based services, and connectivity to devices, car networks and broadband networks are all covered by IVI. MeeGo may strengthen the position of the platform in opposition to competing operating systems Apple iOS, Google Android and Microsoft Windows Phone 7.
