It’s all about the brand what matters. According to a latest CNET report, when a 3D TV is switched over from 2D mode to 3D mode, the power usage can swing radically relying on the manufacturer. Just eye below the findings, it’s pretty interesting:

  • Panasonic’s TC-P50VT25 50-inch plasma used 160.91 watts in 2D mode and 260.53 watts in 3D mode, an increase of 38.24%.
  • Panasonic’s TC-P65VT25 65-inch plasma used 176.84 watts in 2D mode and 354.71 watts in 3D mode, an increase of 50.15%.
  • Samsung’s UN55C8000 55-inch LED used 118.73 watts in 2D mode and 152.89 watts in 3D mode, an increase of 22.34%.
  • The abnormal one was Sony’s XBR-HX909 LED TV, which used less power than any of the other TVs in any mode, only clocked in at 106.66 watts in 2D mode and 104.65 watts in 3D mode, a decrease of 1.92%.

However, the study was conducted on four different 3D TVs and was studied how they changed power consumption (in terms of watts), when switched between 2D and 3D content. CNET found the two Panasonic plasma models saw a spectacular hike in power usage, while the Samsung LED model also jumped by more than 20%. However, the Sony LED model actually saved more power when it was put on 3D mode.

Although CNET could not say for certain what caused the change in power, but assumed that it was because of the extra brightness required to display a 3D image. This was the most perceptible in the Panasonic models, while the Sony one actually seemed to dim a bit when switched to 3D. So strike for the brand first next time.

Three Dimensional home television programing is going to be the next big thing since HD and Blueray! Computer users have been cutting their teeth with 3D for a year, with Nvidia’s 3D technology but it has not reached the mass market yet.

With more and more films being made in 3D it is only a matter of time before this technology reaches the wide market place. 3D has undergone a tremendous resurrection in the public’s consciousness. Block busters such as Avatar, paved the way introducing new technology to film makers.

This year alone in Hollywood movies you will see close to 80 films in 3D HD come out.

Companies such as Sony, Samsung, and LG are making 3D televisions right now for consumers homes.
