Jailbreaking Your iPhone 3GS Running iOS4: The First Release

Recently Apple revealed the final verison of iOS4, known as the Gold Master build. But as you know- it didn’t required much of a time to be leaked online and was available for everyone to download it. Not only this but also a hacker seems to have released a jailbreak tool for iOS4 for the iPhone 3GS – allowing iPhone 3GS users to jailbreak their iPhone 3GS. Indeed, quite a number of blogs are hinting out ways in which you can try out iOS4 – if you don’t mind risking your iPhone!

Well, though I have not tried the process myself, I cannot make comments on its worth. However, several blogs are giving complete directives on – How one can get iOS 4 on your device now? You ought to have either an iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G or a second or third generation iPod Touch.

If you carry an iPhone and a Mac already- then you have to download the beta version of iTunes 9.2 and install it on your system like any other app. Following this, you then have to download the iOS 4 gold master build. Once that’s done, you just plug your iPhone into iTunes and select it under ‘Devices.’ From there, select the restore option and press alt+click, select the iOS 4 ipsw file and iTunes takes care of the remaining. Make sure you back up the files on your iPhone before you start this process, because installing iOS 4 this way will wash out everything on your iPhone and then reinstall it.

Logically, this trick seems to be working because Apple does not require your iPhone’s 40-digit unique device identifier (UDID) for iOS 4 to come in effort. Apple uses the UDID to verify that your iPhone is an certified developer device, and is therefore sanctioned to be using developer builds of the iOS.

Some of my friends have even tried this out, and according to them- iOS 4 is working on their iPhones without any sort of problem. But, there’s no assurance that Apple won’t take stern actions if iOS 4 becomes too prevalent or that some parts of your iPhone will stop functioning as this is still a beta after all. You won’t even get right of entry to the iBooks application even with iTunes 9.2 and iOS 4 installed.

Note: A hacker called msft.guy has unveiled a PwnageTool bundle that works with iOS 4. There is also a lesson about how to jailbreak iOS 4 but before trying it yourself, you must know that Jailbreaking is a little more complex than just installing iOS 4.
