Sony is reportedly working on PlayTV 2 for PlayStation 3, besides readying updates for the current PlayTV hardware, according to new reports. Freeview HD support is also rumoured to be on the cards, for free terrestrial TV channels.

Sony Cambridge Studio Senior Producer Mark Green confirmed that it’s currently working on PlayTV 2. According to Green, the new hardware update to the PS3′s TV recording add-on was being developed alongside an update to the existing PlayTV box, DLC for LittleBigPlanet 2 and the PlayStation Move game TV Superstars.”You saw TV Superstars for Move announced a little while ago,” said Green. “We’re still working on Play TV, Play TV 2. And then we have other guys working on other concepts,” he added. “We’ve DLC lined up for a few months to come as yet. Right up until – we’ve got a Christmas pack lined up,” he also said.

Sony just confirmed that the software for PlayTV would receive “a major update” later this year, including Facebook integration. This is the first suggestion that the hardware itself might be overhauled, however. There’s speculation that such an upgrade might include support for digital broadcasts in HD. PlayTV allows PS3 owners to record and play back TV through their PS3s. We expect to hear a lot more about PlayTV 2 from the European-focused Gamescom event in August. Back in 2008, PlayTV was released in PAL territories. Now it’s 2010, what’s next on the cards?

Note: PlayTV is a television set-top box and recorder for the PlayStation 3. It has yet to be released in North America.
