Vodafone has declared that the much-anticipated Google Nexus One Smartphone will be available to UK users from 30 April. Interested customers can place an order from today and Vodafone will be aiming to deliver it by the 5th of May. The cheapest plan includes 600 minutes, unlimited texts, 1GB internet and webmail and 1GB of data at premium WiFi BT Openzone hotspots. Besides, those ordering online are guaranteed to be the first to get the device for “FREE” on a £35 24-month contract. The device is being offered by the firm for free if the people opt for a two year, £30 a month tariff. Other options are available, but expect to pay at least £25 per month with contract lengths of 18 or 24 months.
The phone is the same as the HTC Desire as it comes with a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a 3.7-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, 4GB microSD card and Google Maps Navigation beta. The news will be a relief to people eager to get their hands on the much-hyped device but not prepared to buy a SIM-free version direct from Google. However Vodafone has not said whether the Nexus One will be launched on PAYG yet.
Google is formally bringing the Nexus One to Europe for the first time and is remarkably breaking with its previous policies as previously the phone has never been free and has only been available directly through Google’s website. While free Smartphones are more common in Europe, Vodafone’s pricing is more belligerent than for the iPhone 3GS. Vodafone is also unique among Nexus One carriers in selling the phone directly through its own page and suggests Google is willing to break its previous rule to reach more customers than it has in the past.
