Verizon, the largest U.S. mobile carrier may come up with Apple’s blockbuster iPhone device this year. According to The Wall Street Journal report, Apple is developing a new iPhone that would be capable of running on Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel, the No. 3 U.S. wireless carrier.

Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg stated at a conference hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations that, “We’re open to getting the device; our network is capable of handling it.” Seidenberg said it hopes to to sell an iPhone that supports a high-speed fourth generation network the company is building. On his interview, another thing that came into limelight was Verizon Communications does not see a case to pursue a merger with Vodafone Group Plc , its wireless joint venture partner. “Absent new information, a merger doesn’t seem to have a lot of appeal,” Seidenberg told reporters. Verizon owns 55 percent of Verizon Wireless and Vodafone own the remaining 45 percent.

Earlier Verizon was the first choice of Apple and we never knew what went wrong during the intervention that the iPhone finally went to AT&T. AT&T and Apple has an exclusive contract that expires in 2010. AT&T will not like the idea though, but that doesn’t matter much to consumers. Apple has made many changes since the launch of the first generation iPhone. It has gone into the hands of multiple carriers in many countries and unlocked iPhone 3G is available for users in Hong Kong after the failure of many rounds of talk with China Mobile. Is this the right time then for Apple to extend the iPhone 3G to other carriers here as well? This will mean reaching out to more users and also giving consumers the choice of handpicking the better network.
