Sony To Miss On Linux: New PS3 Update For Better Security

Sony declares today that after April 1, users running Linux would no longer be able to access their data as the upcoming PS3 3.21 firmware update will disable the “Install Other OS” feature. This step was necessary for security concerns.  Available on models released before the accessibility of the PS3 Slim, the feature is useful for people who wish to run Linux on their console and organizations that use clusters of PS3s as supercomputing networks. But still if you wish to continue with Linux, then you can continue without upgrading to 3.21 but will be sure to miss on several features. Those of you who do plan on updating are advised to back up any data stored because later you won’t be able to access it after your update.

If you are one of those who are planning to miss on the new update, you should first make a note of features you would miss on.  You will no more have the access to sign in to PlayStation Network which means online features of PS3 games and chat will not be available. Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later cannot be used anymore. Even Playback of copyright-protected videos that is stored on a media server or use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later.

“For most of you, this won’t have any impact on how you use your PS3,” the company claims. “If you are one of the few who use the “Other OS” feature, or if you belong to an organisation that does, then you can choose not to upgrade your system.” This step came as a preventive security scheme after in January, a US hacker known for unlocking the Apple iPhone told the BBC he had managed to crack the PS3, admitting his workaround would allow players to run pirated games as well as older PS2 software.
