Microsoft has Unveiled the role-playing adventure Fable 3, with arrival date set for holiday 2010. Today at GamesCon Peter Molyneux formally announced Fable 3 putting to end months of speculation that began in March with Jonathan Ross’ now famous twitter blunder.
This time in Fable 3 the hero will be the ruler of Albion and every decision will have an even greater impact on the game world than in previous titles. In the epic story of Fable III, the journey to rule the throne of Albion begins five decades after the events of the last chapter, and you play as the child of your hero from Fable II. As you rule your kingdom as king or queen, you will be called upon to make choices and sacrifices that will test your morality and can affect your entire kingdom. Themes of heroism, leadership and consequence are taken to a grand scale as you fight to unite a divided people.
Fable 3 is more advanced in so many ways, the developers wanted to be able to have the choice to eradicate poverty as well as keeping tyrants and all of the money as well. Once in command, quests will play out a bit differently than in past games. Being called “judgments,” towns people ultimately ask you to make difficult decisions for them. The example Molyneux uses is, “Someone comes in and says, “We’ve caught this girl stealing food.” Players can call in the cook and she says, “We’ve caught her stealing and we need to set an example.” Then, players can either go and investigate further, or can summarily decide her fate. If a player continues, the girl might say, “I’m starving and my family needs some food” and you can go out and see her family. You can think of this as a new way of accepting quests.”
The first installment will be available for free from September 29. The download version will boast full compatibility with Knothole Island and See the Future add-ons. It’ll also feature the cooperative play element.
This is an interesting new use of the Games on Demand concept, and could well represent the next step on from the whole demo concept: get a section of the game for free, then sign up for the rest.
