Netflix Inc. the online movie rental company has struck a deal with Sony to bring streaming movies to Bravia the internet enabled televisions. Netflix offers about 12,000 movies and TV shows for instant streaming over the Internet, for no additional cost to subscribers who pay at least $9 per month for a DVD rental plan.
Sony is the latest consumer electronics company to partner with Netflix, which has a major distribution site in West Sacramento. Others include Microsoft Corp. with its Xbox360, LG Electronics, Roku, Samsung, TiVo and VIZIO.
Playstation 3 is removed from Sony’s deal with Netflix: given the console’s networking and high-definition output capabilities, it would seem a natural fit for tying into a streaming video service—and Microsoft has see strong success offering Netflix streaming video via Xbox Live. Even if the interested buyer does not have Sony Bravia TV the Netflix and Amazon video can be added to any TV with the $100 Roku Player. Even Playstation 3 can access Netflix via third party “Play On” software.
Netflix’s plans start at $8.99 per month (for one DVD out at a time), which includes unlimited Internet streaming of 12,000 choices and unlimited DVDs by mail from a library of more than 100,000 DVD titles.
