Google on Tuesday night detonated a Nuclear device on the OS giants Apple and Microsoft by announcing its plans to develop an operating system for PC which like Android will be based on Linux.
Initially Google’s OS will target small but popular Netbooks and would be an open source project where developers from around the globe can take part. As said by Google, the new Chrome OS will focus on speed, simplicity and security, the characteristics similar to its popular Chrome Browser.
Goolge predicted that the Chrome OS should be available in the second half of next year and will be basically Web centric and cater to the needs of lightweight Netbooks.
This is the Google’s boldest and most daring challenge yet to the super power Microsoft and the battle between the two giants will get interesting and ultimately consumers will benefit from the duel. Google has lured away some top Microsoft employees and was expected to come up with an OS  as Google is already providing free online alternative to Microsoft’s top selling applications of word processing and spreadsheet.
Features:

  • Based on the x86 architecture, used by Intel, AMD and ARM architecture.
  • Web-centric, lightweight and more secure
  • Linux based
  • Fast Booting

According to Google’s vice president of product management Mr Sundar Pichai “Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we’re already talking to partners about the project, and we’ll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.”
As some experts are expressing the concern regarding the overlapping of Android and the Chrome OS but the Google’s Sundar Pichai and Linus Upson said in the blog that “While there are areas where Google Chrome OS and Android overlap, we believe choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google”.
Both Microsoft and Apple have plans to release new operating systems in 2009. For Microsoft, Windows 7 is an opportunity to erase the stain left by poor customer response to Vista.
